Entrevista - Katherine Bellman - BLOG: Split/Gender

1. How is it liveing in Toronto?

Toronto is amazeing. It is full of mixed cultures from many different backgrounds, I can not imagine being anywhere else to start my art career.

2.  Why do you love tea?

Coleção de chás de Katherine

I love tea because of its own history and culture that surounds it. Through it I have met many new friends, online and in person.  The different methods to make each tea as well as the significance behind it fasinates me to no end. I am reading Kakuzo Okakura who has made me see tea as a relaxed Zen/Tao like religon.

e é obra do Kakuzo!

3. What is the Colletive Lolita Vulgar?
And what is your participation in this group?

Lolita Vulgar Collective is a group which ia dedicated to the arts in all forms. Currently there is four members each brining something different to the pot. Photography, drawing and painting, music, etc. We are a young collective that hopes to expand over time, not just in Toronto but wherever our members may be.  Right now I run the visual art portion of the group. Which only consists of the work on Ruin and Rebirth and Split/Gender. We work together to ensure regular posts are made to both.

4. Can you tell me about your work HYSTERIA?

Hysteria. Its a knitted scultural series that began at two points of time through my art practice. First was knitting sculpturally, my class visited a sculpture studio and then were instructed to create birds in any way we wished.

I was knitting at the time and found the pattern for the uterus.
The main body of the work I made was from this pattern. The result was a "raw chicken".  The reception was great.

Then at the end of my finnal year at OCAD University I had begun to try to create just the full uterus. Then the crazy idea of a wall full of them was born.
Hysteria was only a test for Hysteria II, which will be the wall.
This will take some time to make many of these little plushies. I am eager to see this work visualized.

5. How  was study at Ocad?

Eu DEFINITIVAMENTE preciso conhecer a OCAD!
http://www.ocad.ca/
Prédio da OCAD

OCAD was great. A beautiful network of creative individuals all together in one building. Collaborations happened all the time between students of cross discipline's.
My department was full of wonderful Faculty all whom have gone through the same struggles their students go through now. Each one of them helped shape and improve my work, I am very grateful to have met each and everyone of them.

6. Who is your favorites artist?

Lisa Yuskuvage is one of my favourite modern artists.
Her colours are so bright and paint is so juicy.

For older work, I like Manet or any of the Impressionist' for that matter.
Their style was inspired by Japanese prints.  With my own love of Japan I can not but love their work as well.

7. Why do you blog? What is yours favorite blogs?

http://split-gender.blogspot.com/

I blog so that I can keep people up to date on my art work as well as connect with others who either like tea or my own work. It is great way to meet people from all over the world.  I have so many favourites for blogs that I can not name just one. My list on my blogger is a list of ones I like a lot.

8. How is your studio? What do you most like in it?

My studio is great. It is my bedroom, tea room, office, library and my studio. All in one. I hope to have a bit more room when I get the chance to move to a new place but considering my current work the amount of space is just right. My bed is a futon so most times it is folded up into a "couch" for more room. To preserve space I have most of my materials on a small cart on wheels. For storage I have some space above my bookshelf,  I am also in the process of obtaining some museum boxes to store finished work.

Eu amei o studio da Katherine!!!!
7 fotos lindas para vocês conferirem:

Eu simplesmente adorei o studio da Katherine!

9. What is your dream?

My dream is to one day have a gallery with studio space in the back for artists in need. Recently I have been adding to this, the thought of having a small tea bar possibly came to mind. Perhaps I am too obsessed with tea.

10. What is you relation with this blog: http://ruinrebirth.blogspot.com/ ?

Ruin and Rebirth is my fiance's blog. We have been together for 6 years and have known each other for ten years now. She is my inspiration, my muse. Just as I am hers.
